We’re getting an Emoji movie. Here’s what that means
It’s all happening, people. There is officially an emoji movie our the future.
Sony Pictures won a bidding war over two other studios for a movie starring our favorite non-verbal tools of correspondence. The hotly pursued movie reportedly pulled a seven figure price tag and the project is getting a green light.
There’s no script yet, so we don’t really know what it’s going to about, but it could feature any, and all of our fave emoji characters. Dancing girl? Maybe. Silly ghost? Yes, please. Kissy-face cat? We can only hope. It’s probably hard to imagine what the heck an emoji movie would even look like, but we also felt similar skepticism about a Lego movie. Remember? And look how awesome that turned out.
What we do know, from Deadline, is that the film will be directed and co-written by Anthony Leondis—who originally pitched the project to studios. Leondis worked on Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of Masters, so this isn’t his first animation rodeo. We also learned that since emoji are technically “public domain,” there’s no rights issues for studios to deal with and that makes the project all the more appealing to execs.
For us? We were already sold at emoji movie.
