Emma Watson’s newest movie barely made $60 — and here’s why

While Emma Watson may be known for starring in one of the most lucrative film franchises in history — the Harry Potter movies grossed about 7.7 BILLION in global box office, according to Forbes — her latest film hasn’t been doing as well. It only made $61 total (or £47) in its opening weekend in the UK. Not $6,100. Not $61,000. But 61 bucks. WHAT? But, wait, there’s a reason for that.

The film, The Colony, or previously known as Colonia, only opened in three theaters in the UK, according to Time, and is set to make most of its money from Video on Demand. Interesting. So, calm down everyone.

Directed by Florian Gallenberger and also starring Daniel Brühl, The Colony is about a woman named Lena (Watson) who goes undercover in a cult-like organization in Chile to save her boyfriend (Brühl), who has been kidnapped by the Chilean secret police. Once they find each other again, they both realize that the group is incredibly dangerous, and that people rarely, if ever, can escape. The film is based on real events.

It honestly looks really good, and we love that Emma gets to do the rescuing, rather than being a regular ‘ole damsel in distress. You can check out the trailer here.

Emma, who in the trailer can be seen kissing her co-star, recently discussed the way audiences annoyingly latched onto her sexuality in the trailer. One publication went so far as to title the entire article about the trailer’s release, “Emma Watson indulges in passionate display with Daniel Brühl as they roll around on the bed in new trailer for dark thriller Colonia”. Oy. She told The Times:

“Yes, three and half seconds of nude pictures which were not particularly risqué. It’s deeply irritating…I’m 26 now. I’ve been in 15 films in total and me kissing somebody else shouldn’t be risqué or horrifying, but I think that will continue for a long time. There have been lots of advantages to being part of that franchise [Harry Potter], and playing that role for a long time, but inevitably there are obstacles and that’s one of them.”

We, personally, cannot wait to see the film. Even if it did poorly at the box office. Kinda. Now we can watch it from our couches! It’s our favorite place to be anyway.
