Is Emma Watson’s dress blue or grey?! We need answers!

We can all easily agree that Emma Watson looked like the “belle” of the ball at the Beauty and the Beast London premiere (see what we did there?). She was dressed in a floor-length Emilia Wickstead gown that came complete with a cape-like train at the back.

But we just noticed something kinda weird about this totally gorgeous dress.

In some photos the gown looks undoubtedly light blue, and in others it seems completely grey. (We know, you just flashed back to #thedress, and we’re sorry). It’s going to be okay, though…let’s calmly compare different pictures of Watson’s outfit and get to the bottom of this together.

In this photo from Watson’s Beauty and the Beast Press Tour Insta, the dress looks blue (okay, maybe we’ll grant you lilac — but blueish for sure):

Also, the texture appears smooth, right? Make note of that.

And here the dress is again in different lighting.

See what we mean? Even the texture looks different!

And here it is again from a different angle:

Okay, okay, so we know this isn’t some sort of magical dress transformation (if only we lived in the Harry Potter world), and just comes down to lighting. But we’re still pretty amazed just how completely that can change the look of a red carpet outfit.

via giphyIn reality, the dress is a very pale blue, and even when it looks like a completely different color, it’s one of the most striking garments we’ve ever seen. Watson notes in her Insta post that it’s made from unwanted end-of-the-line fabric pieces sourced from a family-run London business, and we’re so in awe her commitment to local business and eco-friendly products. She’s the bees knees.

We can’t wait to see what she wears next — no matter what color it is (or isn’t).
