Here’s how Emma Watson handled her last breakup
Breakups stink, even when you are beautiful, talented, feminist rock star, Emma Watson. In a recent interview with Vogue UK, the actress shared that her split from rugby player Matt Janney in December 2014 was “horrendous.” Aww, we feel ya, Em! “I felt really uncomfortable,” Emma said, “even before the relationship ended.”
Though the ex-couple confirmed that their breakup was amicable and caused by Emma’s crazy busy work schedule (she’s working on three different movies at once – whew!), it’s understandable that deciding not to date someone can be a big life change. Sometimes, it’s tempting to blame the other person for all the reasons the relationship didn’t last, which means spending a lot of time being angry and resentful. Fortunately, Emma took the high road.
In the interview, she revealed that she went on a silent retreat in Canada’s Rocky Mountains, because, she said, “I wanted to figure out how to be at home with myself.” Yes! Loving someone else is impossible if you don’t love yourself. It’s so important to, as wise 25-year-old world-changer Taylor Swift once said, “be in love with life,” before opening yourself up to another person. That way, your relationships aren’t defining who you are – you are defining who you are.
Emma’s decision to stay silent for a week (which would be very difficult for some of us) shows that it’s OK to take time to take care of yourself. You might find comfort in silence, or you might benefit more from talking to somebody – find what works for you. Your well-being, both physical and emotional, is one of the greatest assets and responsibilities.
Emma had only good things to say about her ex-boyfriends, telling Vogue UK, “The boyfriend or partners I’ve had have generally made me feel really cherished. They’ve built me up.” Fabulous! Anyone worth dating should absolutely build you up and make you feel like you’re, well, like you’re Emma Watson.
Being internationally awesome hasn’t hurt Emma’s dating prospects at all. She added, “I certainly haven’t found that with doing all that I do or being all that I am, that I’ve struggled in my love life.”
Emma also stressed how much her role as UN Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women has changed her.
By the beard of Dumbledore, I do declare, Emma Watson is one heck of a role model. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her, especially in terms of her #HeforShe campaign and her upcoming Disney debut as Belle in the live-action Beauty and the Beast.
