Emma Stone is playing a “punk rock” version of an iconic Disney villain, and life is good

From her Oscar-winning turn as struggling actress Mia in La La Land to her most recent appearance as Queen Anne’s servant in The Favourite, Emma Stone has portrayed a wide range of characters. And now, she’s adding a Disney villain to the mix. Stone’s next role is the ever-iconic, fur-obsessed Cruella de Vil—with a punk twist.

According to The Hollywood ReporterStone is set to star in Cruella, a live-action origin story centered on the villain in One Hundred and One Dalmatians. The new film is reportedly set in the early 1980s and has a “punk vibe.” While Mozart in the Jungle co-creator Alex Timbers was originally on board to direct the film, I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is now in talks to helm the project.

Rumors of Stone’s spotty new role have been circulating since early 2016, but producers Marc Platt, Andrew Gunn, and Kristin Burr are now also attached to the project. Deadline reports that Jez Butterworth has written the film’s script, but the movie doesn’t yet have a release date.

Stone is the Disney villain we never knew we needed. And while we don’t think punk Cruella will make wearing fur cool again, we do see a ton of faux fur inspo in our future.
