Emma Stone opened up to Jennifer Lawrence about the hard lessons she learned in her twenties, and we so relate
Emma Stone has accomplished a lot in the last 10 years, including taking home an Academy Award in 2017 for her starring role in La La Land. However, for the last six months, she’s taken a well-deserved break that’s made her realize a lot of her dreams are now “personal and less professional.”
In a candid new interview with Elle, Stone chatted with longtime friend Jennifer Lawrence about the joys of turning 30 and how she’s recently reassessed what’s most important to her.
“My twenties were a really interesting time, and there’s been a lot that has happened in these past 10 years, both positive and not as positive,” Stone said. “It’s weird how much turning 30 crystallizes your life. Instead of just living the dreams that I had in my youth and getting to do the job that I love to do and making friends and going through all of that, it’s like, now what do I actively want as an adult?”
Stone also opened up about how a lot of things changed (like her parents getting a divorce and the start of her career) in her mid-twenties, so she struggled to relate to the new version of the person she became.
"When I was a teenager, I was in a real sweet spot," Stone explained. "Then in my mid-twenties, I really lost the spot. A lot of things shifted, and it felt like whatever that protective layer was, that mask that you build for yourself—this is my personality, this is who I am—totally shattered."
However, one thing Stone knows for sure is her friendships mean the world to her.
“I think friendship is pretty much everything. Here’s another turning-30 thing I’ve realized: You pick your family. You realize that your friendships, the people who go with you into these next phases of your life – you’re choosing your family," she continued.
Stone went on to say that loyalty is the most important thing in a friendship, and that she’s glad she’s found it in Lawrence.
"You’ve been one of my most loyal friends for years," Stone said. "And I think knowing that you can laugh together and that not everything has to be such a big deal."
Stone’s interview with Lawrence is the most refreshing thing you’ll read today. For starers, it shows that turning 30 is NBD. But it also makes us love their friendship so much more.
