Emma Stone just called out the patriarchy so hard while announcing Best Director at the 2018 Oscars

Emma Stone may have just had the moment of the 2018 Oscars, and she wasn’t even nominated this year. Specifically, Stone just called out the patriarchy while presenting the award for Best Director.

For some context: The 2018 Oscars featured five nominees for the category, with Greta Gerwig being the sole woman (making her only the fifth woman to ever be nominated in the Academy’s 90 year history). Not to mention the fact that a woman has only won the award a single time — Kathryn Bigelow’s for 2008’s The Hurt Locker.

And Emma Stone wasn’t about to overlook it when she presented tonight, March 4th. After an initial introduction, Stone said:

"These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year."

HOLLA! As expected, the comment was met with cheers from the audience, as well as much Twitter approval.

However, some on Twitter also noted that there were other historic achievements that the actress could have acknowledged.

While we love that Stone called out the male-dominated nature of the entertainment industry (because, make no mistake, it is still extremely male dominated), we also 100% recognize the fact that this was a historic year for multiple marginalized groups in this category — and that should 100% be celebrated.
