Emma Stone totally WENT FOR IT when auditioning as Chunk from “The Goonies”
Here’s an undeniable fact: The Goonies is one of the greatest movies ever made. But have you ever wondered what the greatest movie ever madewould have been like if Chunk was replaced with one of today’s biggest stars? Someone like Emma Stone, Ruth Negga, or Natalie Portman? No?
(Neither have we. But now’s our chance to find out!)
The three highly talented and successful actresses auditioned for the role of Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen in a new video for W Magazine — clearly as a joke, but we’re taking it seriously. Because Goonies is to be taken seriously, you guys.
Here’s how it went down: Stone, Negga, and Portman all sat in a casting chair and read for the part of Chunk for casting director extraordinaire Lynn Hirschberg. The scene they read was the one in which Chunk told his entire life story to the scary Fratellis. You remember it, right? They took his ice cream away from him. It was horrifying. (And obviously a key moment in the movie that was full of so many emotions.
Stone’s performance, of course, was perfection. She cried real (fake) tears, just like Chunk did.
She really went for it, and ended up nailing the audition. Especially the simulated barf part.
Like, if she would have auditioned back in 1985, things may have turned out differently in the movie. But she didn’t (because she was three), and the OG Chunk will forever be Chunk.
