Emma Roberts leaves her phone at home on date nights, and taking note, girl

Emma Roberts is a mysterious kind of celebrity. Her Instagram presence has more book recommendations than personal narratives and her long-term relationship with Evan Peters is usually kept quite close to the vest. Here, a new Shape interview with Roberts that proves she’s actually a girl after our own hearts. For starters, Roberts says she hides her phone at home when she’s heading out to dinner with friends or her boyfriend. While that sounds like nothing, in this day and age you could end a friendship if you dare suggest that someone get off their phone at the dinner table. We’re into Roberts’s philosophy and want to try it out.

“I’ve learned to step away from electronics and be fully present,” the actress told Shape via Just Jared. “If I’m going out to eat with friends or my boyfriend, I leave my phone at home so that I’m not reaching for it. It gives my brain room to breathe, and it feels really good.”

Some of her other mindful practices include reading, which is something we can DEF get behind.

“Reading is my form of self-care and medication,” she also revealed in the interview. “I set aside at least 20 minutes a day for it. Sometimes that turns into 30 minutes, an hour, two hours.”

Leaving your phone at your home when you head out for a date or to meet a friend for lunch is a great first step towards mindfulness.

If you’re the kind of person who gets bored during yoga or anxious during meditation, maybe you’d like the Emma Roberts school of zen philosophy: read more books and leave your phone at home.
