Emma González had the most savage response to the NRA going broke

In one beautiful example of karma, the National Rifle Association recently announced it’s losing money. (Cue the world’s smallest violin.) The NRA alleged in a series of court filings in late July that “negative statements following mass shootings”—as well as actions by the state of New York and Gov. Andrew Cuomo—have put the organization in such financial jeopardy, it may be “unable to exist as a not-for-profit or pursue its advocacy mission,” Teen Vogue reports. When Parkland survivor Emma González heard the news that March for Our Lives contributed to the NRA’s financial woes, she had the perfect clapback to end all clapbacks.

González was asked about the NRA’s announcement during an appearance on BuzzFeed News’ morning show, AM to DM. Her epic response? For starters, she literally took a sip of tea. Then, she spoke.

“They are, and I’m happy about that,” she said. “Because the National Rifle Association used to stand for safety. And now it’s like, ‘We’re going to take money from the gun companies, the companies that manufacture weapons of this caliber, and when there is mass shootings, we’re going to make more money, so we going to encourage politicians to say what we want them to say, so that we will continue to get more money in the long run and not be the company that people used to think we are.’”

Emma González emerged as a leader in the gun control movement after surviving the February 14th mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where former student Nikolas Cruz killed 17 students and staff members.

González was one of the organizers behind the March for Our Lives, a march on Washington that took place just weeks after the Parkland shooting to demand legislative action on gun control. She’s also participating in this summer’s Road to Change, a two-month nationwide tour to encourage young people to register to vote. The tour comes to an end on August 12th in Newtown, Connecticut, the site of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

González, who appeared on AM to DM ahead of Road to Change’s New York stops, also talked about her famously inspiring March for Our Lives speech. If you’ll remember, the activist stood silently on stage for several minutes to honor the victims of the Parkland shooting.

"It was a low place for everybody," González said. "The whole point of that silence was to create an environment where people could be upset because it was a rough time period. And I'm getting emotional talking about it now because I'm remembering that mindset. But it was important to do."
