Emily Blunt’s Awesome Response to an Awkward Question
We’ve all said things we don’t really mean in the long run. But if you’re a famous actress like Emily Blunt, you’re held accountable for everything you say, even if you don’t remember ever saying it.
Back in 2005, Blunt publicly stated that she would take horribly paid theater gigs for the rest of her life before ever taking a role “as a spear carrier in a Tom Cruise movie.” I don’t recall her ever saying that, but a Telegraph reporter brought it up in a new interview with the celebrity, which is a little awkward given the fact that Blunt just made a film with the guy. Blunt, who stars alongside Tom Cruise in action film Edge of Tomorrow, denied ever making this comment, telling the writer, “I never said that! What an awful thing to say.”
The journalist whipped out a copy of the quote, made in a Telegraph interview nearly ten years ago. Blunt responded by laughing hysterically and saying, “That is so funny. Well, at least I’m not a spear carrier.”
She also came to the defense of her co-star, saying, “[Tom] doesn’t take himself that seriously and he is very self-effacing. He couldn’t care less what people think about him – that’s quite refreshing.”
Blunt handled an awkward moment perfectly, and reminded us how much people change.
Nine years ago, Blunt was just a hopeful young actress, with a burgeoning career. It wasn’t until the following summer that she lit up the big screen as a snooty-but-secretly-compassionate assistant, Emily, in The Devil Wears Prada.
She was still climbing her way up to the top of the entertainment totem pole back then, and chances are, her priorities are different now than they were at the beginning of her career. These days, she’s happily married to The Office actor John Krasinski, whom she describes as a very “hands-on” dad to their little girl Hazel. She’s also an A-list actress with the freedom to take on challenges she never thought she’d be offered before.
Obviously, she has no regrets about her choices. She describes working on Edge of Tomorrow as a growth experience.. “I was aware that it was going to be so challenging and so physically hard, and I was programmed into thinking it was going to be a bit ‘boys’ club,’” she told press. “But I’ve never been on a film as collaborative as this — everyone was so encouraging, and I was consistently emboldened to speak up and to disagree.”
