You should stop everything and listen to Ellie Goulding’s cover of “Take Me to Church”

When I first heard Hozier’s song “Take Me to Church,” a beautifully melancholic song with these bottomless, sexy vocals that plays with both sociopolitical and romantic messages, I couldn’t NOT listen to it. It magically never, ever got old. Whenever it came on the radio (like five hundred times a day for awhile there), I listened to it. When Spotify decided to include it in my personalized radio, I was all ears. When Hozier’s music video for “Take Me to Church” debuted, I watched it over and over and over again. There was no stopping me and Hozier. And then Ellie Goulding’s cover came along yesterday and blew my mind all over again.

Ellie Goulding is the perfect singer to cover Hozier, because Ellie is like our fairy pop princess who can do anything and everything, like a lithesome hummingbird behind the scenes. Her music is ethereal, glittery, and softly empowering. I mean, not only were Lights and Halcyon both super strong, dazzling albums, but she’s also the queen of covering songs, like Mumford and Sons’ “The Cave,” Elton John’s “Your Song,” and Alt J’s “Tessellate.” And all of her covers manage retain the essence of the original song, yet add Ellie’s mystical vibes.

Ellie’s cover of “Take Me to Church” is endlessly beautiful. It’s sorrowful and raw. It’s addictive. It’s everything. And you should probably listen to it like, right now.
