Why awesome mom Ellen Pompeo is grateful for the role models in her daughters’ lives

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo knows how important it is that her daughters, 2-year-old Sienna May and 6-year-old Stella Luna, have strong role models to look up to, and even more importantly, that those strong role models look like them.

“My daughters are black so it’s very important to me that they see a lot of images of beautiful, powerful, strong black women,” she told People. Ellen makes sure to prominently display magazines with successful black women on the cover around the house (Kerry Washington is a constant presence on the family coffee table), and if Venus or Serena is dominating on the tennis court, you can be sure that game is playing on the TV, and that Ellen’s daughters are watching.

“I feel really fortunate that they are growing up in a time [in which] the first president my daughter knows is Barack Obama,” she said. “That’s an incredible gift.”

And Ellen’s gratitude doesn’t stop at Barack. She recently posted a sweet photo on Instagram of her daughters watching Hillary Clinton on TV, thanking the presidential nominee for showing her daughters that “they are capable of anything.”

How inspiring is that? Ellen seems like a great mom.
