Ellen Page’s show ‘Gaycation’ will air special episode on Orlando shooting

By now, many of us have heard about Gaycation, Ellen Page’s Viceland series. The 2016 Emmy Nominee is extremely popular, and pretty important considering the lack of queer representation in the mainstream. What’s exciting, though, is that we recently learned that the series will air a special episode in honor of this summer’s Orlando shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub.

As a part of the series, which seeks to highlight experiences of LGBTQ people around the world, Ellen Page and co-host Ian Daniel, will pay homage to the 49 who died in Orlando by interviewing those impacted by the shooting. The series, which largely focuses its gaze abroad, is turning its eye inward to discuss what queer culture looks like at home in this majorly valuable way.

It’s extremely meaningful to see Ellen Page and Ian Daniel deciding to give further voice to those whose lives were most directly shaken by the shooting at Pulse, as it’s important that we go beyond mainstream media and illustrate the depth of hurt felt by queer people following the massacre via queer media. There’s just something different about telling your story to someone who can relate to you on that identity-level, and we hope that by highlighting their stories, Page will provide some sort of healing to survivors of Pulse and the loved ones of those who were killed in the violent event.

You can watch the special, titled Gaycation Presents: Orlando, August 24.
