Elizabeth Warren’s kickass engagement story: “He said yes”
It’s hardly news that Elizabeth Warren is a feminist. She is the first female senator from Massachusetts and considered one of the leading members of the Democratic Party. You probably heard her name come up numerous times when everyone was speculating about the 2016 Presidential candidates (though Warren has firmly said that she won’t be running). But today we’re celebrating the Senator for something wonderfully apolitical.
This week, Warren posted the story of her engagement on Facebook and managed to make it both sweet and badass. In the post, she writes about falling for her husband, Bruce Mann, a Harvard Law professor: “I was completely crazy about him, and I still am.” Adorable, not atypical. But then she went on to write, “When I proposed to him, he said yes. I bought a sundress that could double as a wedding gown, and 35 years ago today, I married Bruce.”
Yes, you read that right—she proposed to him. In a nation where it’s still pretty taboo for women to propose to men—only for five percent of couples married in the last ten years did the woman propose —Elizabeth Warren wasn’t afraid to blaze her own trail (even, 35 years ago) and wear a practical dress while doing it! At the end of the post she also threw in a subtle nod to the Supreme Court’s recent nation-wide legalization of gay marriage by noting, “this anniversary, I’ll celebrate living in America where everyone can marry their own Bruce—their best friend, biggest supporter, and love of their life.”
So far, the post has over 222,000 likes, almost 9,000 shares, and more than ten thousand comments. Because when it comes to love and leading ladies, what’s there not to celebrate?
