Elizabeth Warren’s DNC Speech Had More Easter Eggs Than a Taylor Swift Song

Last night, August 19th, marked the third night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, and it was a historic one. Kamala Harris officially became the first Black and South Asian woman to ever accept a major party’s vice presidential nomination. And the night was chock-full of speakers and performances, including from Billie Eilish, emcee Kerry Washington, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. Senator Elizabeth Warren addressed the nation from a classroom for early childhood education in Massachusetts, and the former teacher sneaked in some hidden messages in the background. It was some Taylor Swift-level Easter egg hiding—and about as detail-oriented as we’d expect from Warren.

Warren’s speech centered on childcare, specifically amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States. But she carefully used the tools around her—the literal building blocks of a classroom—to send messages about other causes close to her heart.

Eagle-eyed viewers honed in on colorful blocks on the shelves behind Warren. They spelled out BLM, a nod to the continuing Black Lives Matter protests across the country.

But that wasn’t the only hidden message in Warren’s DNC speech. There were also different blocks behind her other shoulder that spelled out “DBFH,” which is a reference to her campaign slogan, “Dream big, fight harder.”

Not only that, but there was a costume for a U.S. Postal Service worker hanging on a shelf, which is a shout-out to Warren’s stance on saving the Post Office—an easter egg that was confirmed by Warren’s own team.

Other blocks spelled out Joe, in support of presidental candidate Joe Biden, and spread across the classroom were references to Warren’s Massachusetts roots. See all of them in this Twitter thread from @TeamWarren.

No matter how many Easter eggs and hidden messages, they didn’t distract from the major message in Warren’s speech: making childcare more accessible.

“Childcare was already hard to find before the pandemic,” the Massachusetts senator said. “And now, parents are stuck—no idea when schools can safely reopen and even fewer childcare options. The devastation is enormous. And the way I see it: big problems demand big solutions.”

Her big solution involves Joe Biden’s childcare plan, which she lay out in the speech, tying it back toward stories about her childhood in Oklahoma, and as an adult, when she wanted to be a teacher but couldn’t access childcare to have the time to invest in her goals.

“It’s time to recognize that childcare is part of the basic infrastructure of this nation—it’s infrastructure for families,” Warren said. “Joe and Kamala will make high-quality child care affordable for every family, make preschool universal, and raise the wages for every child care worker.”
