“The Electric Slide” is likely about a vibrator, and we are so here for this sex-positive anthem
The internet just found out that iconic song “Electric Boogie (The Electric Slide)” was rumored to have been written about a vibrator, and um, YAS. Marcia Griffiths’ 1983 hit “Electric Slide” is a party, bar mitzvah, and wedding song staple, and we bet you didn’t know you were celebrating female pleasure when you danced along it.
This revelation came about when someone, well, simply listened to the lyrics: “You gotta feel it (it’s electric!)/Ooh, it’s shakin’ (it’s electric!)” and “She’s movin’ like electric/She sure got the boogie,” it really is bonkers that it took this long for everyone to catch on.
It’s unclear which tweet started this movement, but sometime around June 25th the internet made the discovery and then couldn’t stop talking about the “Electric Slide” as an ode to vibes.
The song’s now 71-year-old songwriter Bunny Wailer (real name Neville Livingston) resides in Kingston, Jamaica and a source close to the retired songwriter told LGBT news site Aazios.com that the song is 100% about a vibrator and that Livingston wrote it after a girlfriend said she didn’t need him anymore because she had a vibrator she nicknamed “the electric slide.” Apparently, Livingston is shocked it took us all these years to put it together. false

Snopes lists this rumor as “unproven.” However, the song was first released in 1983 and The Daily Beast reported in a 2012 deep-dive about vibrators that the sex toy industry really took off in the ’80s. So yeah, the timelines check out. This song was probably definitely about a female pleasure device.
