All the times Ed Sheeran’s songs proved he was wise beyond his years
Surprise! Ed Sheeran has a brand new song out. It’s actually a brand new Macklemore song, and Sheeran lends his swoon-worthy voice to the chorus singing about something he knows really well: fatherhood.
Record scratch, hold up, what? Yup, Sheeran sings a beautiful tune about being a dad… even though he’s not a dad, so don’t anyone freak out OK? The brand new track, titled “Growing Up” was written for the birth of Macklemore‘s daughter. Sheeran just steps in to sing about guiding a little one through life, even though he doesn’t have a little one in his life just yet (unless you’re counting cats).
This isn’t the first time Sheeran has dropped major wisdom on us through his songs, and hopefully it won’t be the last. Just pick anyone of his tunes and you’ll realize he is like some all-knowing, tattooed, ginger sage, and we love him for that. Here are just a few of the best times Sheeran has dropped major knowledge on us about life, love, and growing up.
By now, maybe everyone knows the story behind “A Team,” but if not here goes: Sheeran wrote it after he spent some time visiting a homeless shelter. The song is about struggling to recover from addiction, getting back onto the right track in life, and keeping the dream of a better life alive. Pretty heavy stuff, and it was Sheeran’s first single, too.
It’s too cold outside / for angels to fly
This brand new Macklemore song isn’t the first time Sheeran has sung about fatherhood. “Small Bump” is all about baby, who sadly dies before it’s born. It is maybe the saddest song Sheeran’s ever written.
‘Cos you were just a small bump / unborn for four months/ then torn from life / maybe you were needed up there / but we’re still unaware as why.
If you build something and it doesn’t work, you just knock it down and start all over again. That’s what Sheeran is willing to do. He’s also going to give his all to love and support you, even while the storm is raging on. A song about protecting someone so much, he in turn loves them even MORE? How is that possible? Oh wait, it’s because Sheeran’s love might be the strongest force on earth.

Oh yes, the song from The Fault In Our Stars. You might be already crying at that mention, and you’ll cry even harder after listening to Sheeran’s “All Of The Stars.” It’s about losing a loved one, and keeping their memory alive even after they’re gone.

This song’s not a love song. Instead, it’s a song about Sheeran’s grandfather who suffered from Alzheimer for a majority of Sheeran’s life. In it, Sheeran sings about what it was like to lose his grandfather to the disease as he slowly forgot everything.
My father told me, son / it’s not his fault he doesn’t know your face / you’re not the only one
Sheeran got into his time machine, traveled into the future, and saw himself and his true love at age 70, and realized they were still in love. He’s been falling in love with her every day of his life. So then he came back to present day, and wrote one of the best love songs ever. Also anything that takes place under “a thousand stars” is a top-notch moment. Sheeran’s mind seems to work in two modes: romantic, and then MOST romantic.

Aw man, just everything about “Photograph.” For starters, he talks about how sometimes love hurts. Then, even though that love might hurt, and even though that love might end, it’s saved inside of a photograph to live on forever. So keep that love tucked away in your pocket, in a photograph, so you’ll always have it with you no matter what. And if you want, you can return back to that memory anytime you want through the photograph.
