Ed Sheeran explains why Taylor Swift’s childhood turned her into the major success she is now
Calling all so-called un-popular kids, this one’s for you — or really for anyone, but especially you. Singer Ed Sheeran admits that being the “underdog” is what made both he and Taylor Swift the successes they are now. Yes, it’s true, and something we should all remember.
The “Shape of You” singer opened up about his less-than ideal childhood — at least popularity wise — in British GQ’s March issue and we’re very impressed.
We can’t believe there was a time that Sheeran wasn’t popular, but knowing his past has made him so strong today, is awesome.
"There's an underdog element to it," Sheeran told British GQ in his cover shoot about his rise to fame. "Taylor [Swift] was never the popular kid in school. I was never the popular kid in school. Then you get to the point when you become the most popular kid in school — and we both take it a bit too far."
While in some cases taking it too far is a bad thing, but in the British singer and his BFF’s case, it helped them become mega stars.
“She wants to be the biggest female artist in the world and I want to be the biggest male artist in the world,” he explained. “It also comes from always being told that you can’t do something and being like, ‘F**k you. I can.’”
Despite the fact that feeling like you don’t fit in stinks, we are so happy Sheeran and Swift turned that into a beyond successful music career — and one of our favorite Hollywood friendships.
The 25-year-old singer also opened up about overcoming the ginger stigma, or people thinking that just because of his red hair he couldn’t be attractive.
Side note: Redheads are totally hot! Prince Harry, Ed Sheeran, Rupert Grint — what’s not to love?
"There's always a stigma with ginger people, and I was definitely considered unattractive when I was younger," Sheeran told the publication. "But now I'm on the f**king cover of 'GQ!'"
Preach, Ed, preach! What do you think about Sheeran’s road to success? We are BIG fans of the redheaded singer and SO proud of him…and his girl T.Swift.
