Ed Sheeran’s new album made history by shattering this Spotify record

At the close of its first day being released, Ed Sheeran’s album changed Spotify streaming history. His third LP, ÷ (aka Divide), holds the record for most streams in a single day. But, that’s no small feat. According to the platform, the record was previously held by The Weeknd’s 2016 album Starboy, which songs were played a total of 29 million times.

Sheeran not only topped this with ÷, he pretty much demolished it. His 2017 release had a total of 56.73 million plays on March 3rd, alone. Furthermore, Spotify doesn’t anticipate anyone breaking the current record for quite some time.

With a banging single like “Shape of You,” we can totally see why Sheeran’s release made history.

Speaking of “Shape of You,” the amazing single broke the record for most streams in a day of one song. Spotify users played the track a total of 10.12 million times Friday.

The release of ÷ also helped Sheeran gain the record for the greatest number of plays of all of his music in 24 hours. Turns out, fans also turned up the volume on his entire catalogue of work upon the album’s release. A total of 68.7 million times, to be exact.

And to add to his accolades, “Shape of You” has been holding the top spot of the Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks.

But, at 26 years old, Sheeran is just getting started. And we can’t wait to see what other major records he breaks along the way. Don’t underestimate him, because he’s a musical force.
