The important reason why Ed Sheeran just quit all social media
Earlier this week, Ed Sheeran was named Facebook’s “Most Talked About Entertainer,” because, DUH, he’s had a phenomenal year. While we’re going to keep on talking about him till he can’t sweep us off of our feet anymore, he won’t know about it. That’s because in a Big Decision Move, Sheeran has decided to leave the Internet for the time being.
Posting to Instagram, Sheeran shared a text-image explaining that he’s “taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while.” He’s not leaving forever, just for a little bit, and he’s most certainly earned this reprieve from texts, emails, Tweets, Instagrams, Snapchats, trending stories — everything.
“I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes,” he writes, “So I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
Sheeran has been non-stop since he first burst onto the scene with his album, +. Since then, he’s toured the world, found himself a cozy home at the top of the Billboard Charts, appeared in a TV show, toured the world again, started his own record label, met and surprised fans from all over, and now, he’s ready to take a step back from that. Also, at the beginning of 2016, Sheeran needs to have surgery to recover from a shattered eardrum, which will truly prevent him from going anywhere for a while, and will force him to rest. Perfect time to take a break from everything else, too.
“If you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit,” he writes.
Yes, sadly this means we’re going to be sans-Sheeran for a good chunk of 2016, so hug your copy of X extra tight tonight. But worry not, this is only temporary; it’s not forever. His message ends with an “I’ll be back” hint. That third album from him? It’s coming.
“The third album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn.”
Autumn is a long ways away, but it’ll be here before know it. While we’ll certainly miss Sheeran on our news feeds, we wish him the best and most relaxing break from the Internet. Check out his full message below. MISS YOU ALREADY, ED.
