Ed Sheeran Announced He’s a New Dad With the Cutest Instagram Post
And we know the baby's full, geographic-inspired name.

The world has kind of lost touch with Ed Sheeran since the singer decided to log off of social media in December 2019. And as it turns out, we have a lot to catch up on. Sheeran confirmed after some speculation that he and his wife Cherry Seaborn welcomed a daughter into the family last week, and Sheeran announced the baby’s arrival with a sweet message on Instagram.
Even more exciting? He revealed his and Seaborn’s baby girl’s full name.
“Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you…” Sheeran began in the caption of his September 1st post.
Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter—Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.
Does Lyra mean he’s a fan of the His Dark Materials book series? Does the continent Antarctica have a special meaning to the couple? Sheeran didn’t elaborate, but he did give some updates about their new family of three.
“We are completely in love with her,” he wrote. “Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.”
Sheeran and Seaborn got married in the winter of 2018 but didn’t confirm their marriage until July 2019. They have been friends since childhood, but they are notoriously private about their relationship and family matters—which is incredibly apparent due to the fact they were able to keep their pregnancy on the low for nine months.
When talking to Zane Lowe of Beats 1/Apple Music in 2017, Sheeran expressed he’s been ready to be a dad for a while. “I wanted to be a dad, like, last year,” he said. “I’m ready, let’s go—tour bus babies, little fat, chubby babies that just walk around.”
And when Lyra hits primary school age, he plans to take plenty of time off to help raise her. “When they hit four or five and start primary school, I’m just out,” he told Lowe in 2017. “I think [Bruce] Springsteen took an extended break when his kids went to school. I think that’s going to be me. I want to set up a little studio in the countryside and have new artists come down.”
Though it will probably be a while before we see Lyra grace Sheeran’s Instagram page (if at all), but we’re so excited to hear of her arrival. We wish the new family well as they begin on this new adventure.
