Ed Sheeran covered “skull crushing” heavy metal and it was surprisingly soothing
Ed Sheeran’s been in New York for the past few days, and in-between blowing us away in Central Park with some Good Morning America concert jams, he also stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Sheeran spent yesterday tweeting that he was “doing some cool stuff” on Fallon, and knowing what kind of cool stuff Fallon likes to do, that caught our attention — will Sheeran join in for Ragtime Gals?? Nope, what they did was even better. Fallon had Sheeran cover acoustic versions of Limp Bizkit and other heavy metal songs. Genius.
Fallon packaged the bit as trying to hawk a brand new compilation CD of Sheeran’s where, “pop music’s cherub faced troubadour sings 25 of the darkest, most skull crushing songs ever written.” Hmm, sounds interesting. Can we hear some song samples?
That’s when Sheeran starts singing Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff” and sure it might include lyrics like, “It’s all about the he said she said bull&%$#,” but when Sheeran sings it, it sounds like the voice of a sweet angel outside our bedroom window, trying to win us back with the sweetest love song in all the land.
There’s also a companion CD where Sheeran sings “Hardcore Rap,” and he begins with Ty Dolla $ign’s “Paranoid.” While those lyrics aren’t the nicest lyrics in the world, coming from Sheeran “Paranoid” becomes a song we’d want played at our wedding.
The best part about all of this is that Sheeran is LOVING IT. He’s got the biggest smile on his face, because he knows it’s incredibly silly, but it’s also incredibly amazing. So go ahead and check out the full video from Fallon below. I’d buy both of these albums and I’d play them at bedtime, would you?
