Makeup options that are good for your skin and, like, the planet

Okay, so I’m about to spout some truth. Some makeup can leave you feeling like. . .

When it should really leave you feeling like. . .

How can something that’s supposed to make you feel so good leave you feeling kind of gross and bad? The answer could be the  chemical ingredients that some cosmetic companies put into their products—things like phthalates, parabens, and lead—that some researchers believe could be harmful to your health and even increase your risk of getting certain cancers.

But let’s not dwell on the negative. If you want to try some very good, non-toxic, eco-friendly cosmetic brands that are good for your skin and the planet, we’ve rounded up our favorite ones.

1) Lippy Girl makeup

Lippy Girl makeup calls its products ‘ecocentric,’ which means they’re eco-friendly, natural, organic, vegetarian/vegan and animal friendly. That’s a whole lot of goodness to pack into one compact!

2. Bite Beauty

Lipstick that looks so good you could eat it is a reality with Bite Beauty cosmetics, line of  glamorous créme lipsticks. Bite uses food-grade ingredients that you could technically eat, which makes sense, right?  I mean, the lipstick’s gotta go somewhere when you eat.  It’s not just evaporating into thin-air. . .which means you’re eating it, at least a little of it.  Yikes!  Wouldn’t you rather eat your next slice of pizza while wearing a chemical-free, food-grade lipstick rather than a nasty chemical-filled lipstick? Bite thinks so!  Plus, it’s available at Sephora!

3. Piggy Paint nail polish

Before you put on your next coat of polish, think about this—there’s a reason why most nail polishes stink and are recommended for use in a ventilated area.  It’s because they’re loaded with tons of toxic, flammable chemicals!  Piggy Paint founder, Melanie Hurley, saw the need for a safe, non-toxic nail polish that would be safe for girls of all ages to wear when her daughters became interested in wearing nail polish. She has since set forth on a mission to create beautifully vibrant, kid-friendly nail polish that’s water-based and good for you and the environment!.

Piggy Paint is free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, and acetone—all the yucky stuff that you may not even realize you’re putting in your body when you paint your nails. They even have a color called Forever Fancy. Don’t you want to be forever fancy? I know I do!  Plus Piggy Paint is coming out with a new line of nail polish this spring called SOPHi just for adults that’s longer lasting, odorless, and hypoallergenic with maximum durability.  Hooray for Piggy Paint!

4. Inika cosmetics

The eyes are the windows to the soul. They’re also incredibly sensitive. Ever got sunscreen in your eye? Not a fun situation. Most eyeliners and mascaras can cause a similar stinging reaction if they run.  But don’t worry, all you weepers out there in the world, INIKA Cosmetics is here to save the day!  INIKA’s eyeliners and mascaras are a triple threat—organic, ethical AND beautiful.

5) Tarte cosmetics

Tarte Cosmetics promises that their products are always formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gluten—you know, all those things that you probably don’t want to be putting on your skin. They have AMAZINg products too in an array of gorg colors. For example: Their powder Amazonian clay foundation is as awesome as its name and totally okay to wear for long periods of time. You’ll feel great wearing it knowing that you’re doing your skin a favor by leaving the bad stuff out!
