An easy, DIY-able update to your favorite sweater
Sometimes the smallest changes can have the biggest impact on your look. Think about getting a haircut, or painting your nails. You can feel totally different afterwards, right? Clothes can create the same effect—a fresh detail can make an old top or pair of jeans seem brand new.
This week, make over a favorite sweater or wrap with a quick and easy sewing project. All you’ll need is a small appliqué, or patch. It can be anything: a flower, a phrase or a cute animal. With a few minutes and a couple of stitches, you’ll have a personalized piece to add to your spring wardrobe!
Materials:
- Cardigan or shrug, free of embellishments
- Small appliqué (can be iron-on or sew-on)
- Thread in a corresponding color to the appliqué
- Basic sewing needle
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Iron and ironing board (if the appliqué is iron-on)
Craft away:
- Try the cardigan on and place the appliqué on the left side of the chest. Move the appliqué around until you have it where you want, then use the pins to mark the spot. Take the cardigan off.
- If your appliqué is iron-on, follow the instructions on the package to iron it in place. Let the appliqué cool.
- Cut a couple of feet of thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
- Sew the appliqué to the cardigan. Keep your stitches small and close to the edge of the appliqué to hide your work. Be sure to knot the thread once you’ve stitched al the way around the appliqué to hold your work in place.
- Show off your new, personalized piece of clothing!
