How to dress up like Jess Day from “New Girl” for Halloween

There is one week left until Halloween. We repeat: ONE WEEK. It’s OK if you haven’t yet figured out your costume (or even just bought yourself a Halloween crown), though. We’re here to help!

We think that dressing up for Halloween  as New Girl‘s Jessica Day (played by, of course, our beloved Zooey Deschanel) is a superb idea. Like, come on. You get to go vintage dress shopping. Since we love all things New Girl and Jess Day, we’ve laid out a step-by-step guide to ~*becoming*~ Jess Day this Halloween. You can thank us later.

Step 1: Find the perfect vintage-inspired dress.

Vice Principal Jessica Day is almost always in an incredible dress (unless she’s wearing a two-piece pajama outfit, but that’s a story for another day). So a vintage-style dress is the first thing you’ll need to find on your road to Halloween costume perfection.

Step 2: Get yourself a pair of plastic-frame eyeglasses.

Jess’ glasses not only improve her vision, they’re also a key part of her #adorkable look. While you probably shouldn’t buy prescription glasses if you don’t need ’em (actually you really shouldn’t do this!) you can totally wear square frames with clear glass as part of your New Girl Halloween costume.

Step 5: Curl your hair and get ready to rock straight bangs.

Jess’ signature hairstyle is fairly simple: loose curls and full bangs. To recreate her look, all you’ll need is a 1/2 to 1-inch curling iron, some light hairspray and a wide-tooth comb.

Start by separating your hair into four sections, then take a 1-inch piece of your hair, wrap it around the barrel of your curling iron and hold for a few seconds. Release the curl and spritz it with hairspray; Zooey’s on-screen stylist recommends Oribe Superfine Hairspray.

Once you’ve curled all four sections, brush out your hair with a wide-tooth comb for Jess’ loose, tousled look. Then spritz once more and you’re done!

Step 6: Doll up!

Last but not least, you’ll need to nail Jess’ red lips and full lashes to pull off this Halloween costume.
