This is an actual dress that a girl was sent home for wearing

We thought we wouldn’t have to hear about sexist dress code policies until prom season was fully underway, but unfortunately, there’s always a dress code horror story to be found.

This one takes place at Edmonson County High School in Kentucky, where high school senior Amanda Durbin says she was “humiliated” for supposedly violating the school’s dress code policy. According to Durbin, the policy states that girls may not wear leggings as pants nor can their skirts/dress be more than six inches above their knees.

On Friday, Durbin decided to pair leggings with a sweater to prove that the two can go together without violating the policy.

“It was kind of a protest, but it was a mature protest,” she told Buzzfeed News. She made it through the morning without any comments from teachers or administrators, but eventually she was called to the principal’s office. Edmonson County principal Tommy Hodges reportedly asked Durbin to kneel on the ground, so he could observe how many inches her dress rose above her knees. Feeling uncomfortable, Durbin requested that her parents be called to witness the exchange, which tacked an extra two hours onto the ordeal and took up the rest of her school day.

Once Durbin’s parents arrived, Principal Hodges put her through the ringer: She was told to kneel. As it turns out, in this position, she was not violating dress code. The dress only came up 5 inches above her knee. Apparently unsatisfied, Principal Hodges then told Durbin to “walk across the room with her hands up and kneel back down, to check if her dress would ride up.” With her dress now 8 inches above the knee, Durbin “failed” the dress code test.

“I didn’t really appreciate having to get down on my knees, especially while I was in a dress,” she said. “It did make me feel a little embarrassed, a little insecure of myself.”
