“Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho’s new TV series is holding casting call for a trans actor, and that’s a big deal
Representation matters, it’s a fact! That’s why we love Disney’s Moana, and even more than that we love Moana’s namesake star Auli’i Cravalho’s casting call for her new show. Auli’i is set to star in the new musical series, Drama High, and the show is holding a casting call seeking transgender actors to audition for the chance to play an “extremely talented” singer. This is a huge moment for the trans community, not only because the show is actually asking for a transgender actor to play someone who’s trans, but because this is a major moment for representation on screen.

According to the Williams Institute, transgender people are twice as likely to attempt suicide, and this number rises for transgender students who are bullied in schools. Everyone knows what it’s like to turn on the television and immediately see someone you connect with, someone who’s like you. And the reality is that for the transgender and non-binary community, this isn’t really a reality. Although we’re slowly moving towards representation, Buck from The OA is a perfect example, we still have a long way to go. And that’s why this casting call for Drama High is so important. Not only is this an opportunity for an actor to embrace their identity in a public way, and to be the cool musical kid of the school, but it’s also an acknowledgment at the beautiful array of human-ness.
