Drake dropped a surprise mixtape last night, and it’s pretty dope
We knew something was up when Drake released that ultra-moody short film yesterday! It was just too cryptic.
ICYMI, Drizzy pulled a Beyoncé and released a 17-track commercial mixtape last night, titled If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Since then, squeals of joy have been heard echoing around the world the Twitterverse. Also, literally love the mixtape title, can we say that?
The new project stays true to Drake’s sing-songy and minimalist ways, but don’t look too hard for the love. A far cry from his earlier works on Take Care (2011) and Nothing Was The Same (2013), the new mixtape is filled to the brim with pent-up aggression and allusions to conflict — something we saw foreshadowed in “Jungle” yesterday. Also, not to get too conspiracy oriented, but did the timing of this drop have anything to do with the fact that Diddy was performing at the All Star Game last night? The two have apparently been feuding and even Rolling Stone did a little speculating that Drake was trying to overshadow Diddy’s concert with his surprise-attack release. But we digress.
Reading also includes a few previously-released tracks, “6 God” and “Used To,” which are listed on Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 The Wait 2 mixtape. Other features include Travis $cott and PARTYNEXTDOOR, who also had a strong hand in the album’s production.
We’re still waiting on that full-length Views From The 6 album, Drake! Or is this en lieu of that? We can’t tell! Until we hear otherwise, we’ll treat this mixtape like a heavy appetizer. Check out the new project on iTunes or stream it on Spotify.
