Donald Trump’s running mate once argued that Disney’s “Mulan” was feminist propaganda

Last week, U.S. presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, announced that Indiana Governor Mike Pence was to be his running mate, completing Republican ticket in the run up to the election.

Pence has become known for his conservative, and often controversial, views, including his stances on religious, anti-gay, pro-life, and pro-open trade ideologies. Pence is particularly popular with the religious right, especially those proponents of anti-abortion legislation.

Now Buzzfeed News have unearthed an op-ed that Pence wrote in 1999 during his stint as a radio presenter in Indiana in which he claims that Disney’s Mulan was, in fact, the idea of some “mischievous liberal.”

In the article Pence goes on to claim that the film’s message was just propaganda to encourage a new generation of women about their position in the military, stating, “Despite her delicate features and voice, Disney expects us to believe that Mulan’s ingenuity and courage were enough to carry her to military success on an equal basis with her cloddish cohorts. Obviously, this is Walt Disney’s attempt to add childhood expectation to the cultural debate over the role of women in the military.”

Continuing, Pence goes on to argue that the central love story of Mulan between the central character and Li Shang.

“[M]any young men find many young women to be attractive sexually. Many young women find many young men to be attractive sexually,” he wrote. “Put them together, in close quarters, for long periods of time, and things will get interesting. Just like they eventually did for young Mulan. Moral of story: women in military, bad idea.”

Obviously Pence’s article was written in 1999, so the prospective Republican VP *might* have changed his tune.

However, Mulan’s impact was truly felt as in December it was announced that women can now take on any U.S. military combat role. Yas.
