Donald Trump thinks HIV and HPV are the same thing, and we’re actually speechless
Oh no. OH NO! Donald Trump has baffled us yet again. According to Bill Gates — yes, that Bill Gates — President Trump thinks HIV and HPV are the same thing. We’re currently floating somewhere between being utterly speechless and not being shocked at all.
Just to clarify, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and HPV (human papilloma virus) are nowhere near being the same thing. Yes, both viruses can be transmitted through sexual activity. But HIV, which attacks the immune system and can lead to AIDS, never leaves the human body, and there is no cure. HPV, a virus that causes genital warts and sometimes cancer, has a vaccine.
But it looks like Trump skipped his high school health class STD lecture and then forgot to retain any information Gates gave him about the difference between HIV and HPV the first time they discussed it, because Trump actually asked Gates about the difference between the two viruses on two separate occasions.
Gates relayed the story during a recent Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation staff meeting.
Video footage from the meeting was obtained by MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes.
"Both times he wanted to know if there was a difference between HIV and HPV," Gates recalled referring to two separate meetings with President Trump, one in December 2016 and another in March 2017. "So, I was able to explain that those are rarely confused with each other."
Like the audience, we’re also laughing — but we’re laughing to prevent a nervous breakdown. Donald, you’re making us stress sweat, buddy.
When one of the smartest men in America has to clarify something so commonly known among the general public to the President of the United States we, once again, try to break down how we got to this point in history (hint: white systems of power).
We really hope this sitcom we’re living in is canceled after its first season. Our brains can’t take much more of this.
