Donald Trump’s latest tweet about the Florida shooting completely misses the real issue
On Wednesday, February 14th, 17 people were killed in a devastating Florida high school shooting. The names of two victims have been released, and the shooter, 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, has been arrested. The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was the eighteenth school shooting of 2018. Many people are now turning to lawmakers to urge them to finally take action and do something to end gun violence for good.
Donald Trump has posted a few tweets since news of the school shooting broke. But his latest, which is specifically about the shooter, completely misses the real issue. “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior,” Trump tweeted today, February 15th. “Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”
The tweet makes zero mention of guns or gun laws and focusses solely on the shooter, propagating the common pro-gun argument that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”
Trump also points out that the Florida shooter was “mentally disturbed” and expelled for “bad and erratic behavior.” However, if there were “so many signs” that Cruz was “mentally disturbed,” why was he able to buy a gun in the first place?
Trump also assured the American people that he’s “working” on the school shooting, whatever that means.
Needless to say, Trump’s hollow statement — likely meant to misdirect voters from the real problem at hand — leaves much to be desired.
