Donald Glover is totally cool with his Star Wars character being pansexual, in case there was any doubt
Donald Glover just addressed the talk that his Star Wars character is pansexual — and it all makes perfect sense to him. The on-screen smuggler revealed in a new interview this week that he’s more than ready to embrace Lando Calrissian’s fluid sexuality.
“How can you not be pansexual in space?” the actor said during the soon-to-be-released SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio interview. “There are so many things to have sex with.” Fair point, sir.
In case you missed it, Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan made headlines last week when he commented on Lando’s sexuality.
"There's a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee Williams' [portrayal of Lando's] sexuality," the writer told HuffPo. "I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it's time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of."
Glover agrees with the assessment and fully embraces the new information about his character.
"It didn't seem that weird to me 'cause I feel like if you're in space it's kind of like, the door is open!" he said in the Entertainment Weekly Radio interview. "It's like [not] only guys or girls. No, it's anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have a good time out here."
Like we needed ANOTHER reason to go see Solo this weekend. And in all seriousness, it’s amazing to see both Kasdan and Glover embrace the notion of an LGBTQ character in the Star Wars universe. As longtime fans know, the move toward inclusion is long overdue.
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th.
