Donald Glover is totally down for a Lando spinoff movie, and yes, please

Donald Glover has had quite a year. Aside from his music career and hit television show Atlanta, he’s portraying Lando Calrissian in the upcoming film Solo, which will be released in theaters on May 25th. And, good news, he’s already down for a spinoff — that is, if the Star Wars franchise will let him.

During the Solo: A Star Wars Story Town Hall that’ll be airing on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio on May 24th, Glover chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the possibility.

“It would always be fun to be Lando again…I would love to do it again. It’s really fun. The movie, I feel like, is wide open. This part of the universe without the…I feel like with the Skywalkers, it’s hard because it’s almost like the Bible. There’s a story that you have to tell, and the lineage of that family,” Glover said.

"I feel like out here its like, yeah, we’re just like [hustlers] and gamblers and space pirates, essentially, so you can do a lot more and have a lot more fun," he continued. "And I like those movies a lot. I like the comedy of them, the silliness and also the adventure. I think it would just be fun to do."

Fans felt convinced that a Lando film was definitely happening after a miscommunication between Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and the French cinema site Premiere.com. However, Premiere soon clarified that a Lando movie is not necessarily in the plan.

"Following the publication of our article, Lucasfilm informs us that there would have been a misunderstanding between our journalist and Kathleen Kennedy." Lucasfilm clarified that, "We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it’s not actually happening now, it would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie."

While that’s a huge bummer, it doesn’t mean that a Lando movie is totally off the table. And perhaps after seeing how excited fans were, it will happen sooner rather than later. The important part is that Glover is 100% interested in the opportunity. The actor said he’d have a ton of fun writing a Lando movie — but, in his eyes, “it also is nice to not have to write that. It’s also nice to just, you know, show up in a cape and get pointed in the right direction.”

Hey, we’ll take as much Donald Glover involvement as we can get.
