Dolly Parton said our favorite thing of the day
It’s always nice when a celebrity is super-sweet about/ supportive of her fans. Because right, you probably SHOULD be supportive of the people who gave you the dollar dollar bills to buy all those mansions and beach houses and ski lodges you own. That said, the real stand-out move is when a celebrity uses her power to stand up for the rights of her fans.
Such is the case with Dolly Parton, who recently gave a big shout-out to her LGBT fans in a Billboard interview.
The subject was first broached when the interviewer brought up the fact that Dollywood, a theme park owned by Dolly Parton located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is a hot spot for both conservative church groups and the LGBT community. When asked what this said about Parton, the country superstar replied:
“It’s a place for entertainment, a place for all families, period. It’s for all that. But as far as the Christians, if people want to pass judgment, they’re already sinning. The sin of judging is just as bad as any other sin they might say somebody else is committing. I try to love everybody.”
Later in the interview, when asked about her large gay following, and to what she attributed all that support, Parton explained:
“They know that I completely love and accept them, as I do all people. I’ve struggled enough in my life to be appreciated and understood. I’ve had to go against all kinds of people through the years just to be myself. I think everybody should be allowed to be who they are, and to love who they love. I don’t think we should be judgmental. Lord, I’ve got enough problems of my own to pass judgment on somebody else.”
We’re thrilled to hear Dolly speak out for equality and to hear how much she loves and accepts her fans no matter where they fall on the gender and sexuality spectrums. And for the record, it’s actually not the first time she’s said as much in the press.
“God tells us not to judge one another, no matter what anyone’s sexual preferences are,” she told The Guardian in 2011. “And if someone doesn’t believe what I believe, tough sh–.”
