DIY of the Week: Lace Necklace

It’s officially fall, which also means it’s officially time for fall fashion. Cozy cardigans, statement coats and leather boots—and, of course, all of the accessories. From bracelets to scarves, autumn clothing makes the perfect canvas for fun extras.

This week’s DIY teaches you how to make your own lace necklace, a piece that perfectly doubles as a collar for a sweater or a pretty finishing touch for a dress. With a few simple materials, you can craft this unique necklace in a snap!

Materials:

  • 1 1/2-inch wide white lace
  • 1/8-inch wide white satin ribbon
  • Decorative button
  • White thread
  • Basic sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Fray check

Craft away:

  • Use the measuring tape to measure around the base of your neck, where you want the necklace to sit.
  • Measure out the lace to that same length, and cut it. Apply fray check to the ends of the lace, and let dry.
  • Measure the length of the ends of the piece of lace. Cut two pieces of ribbon to that length, apply fray check to the ends of the ribbon, and let dry.
  • Cut a couple of feet of thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
  • Stitch the pieces of ribbon to the ends of the lace, placing the ribbon in front. This will give a more finished look to your necklace.
  • Place the button onto the front of the lace, on what will be the left side of the necklace when you have it on. Sew it in place.
  • Cut a short length of ribbon and fold it in half, ensuring that the resulting loop can fit around your button. Sew the loop to the right side of the necklace, on the opposite end of the lace from the button.
  • You’re finished! Button this sweet necklace on over your favorite sweater or top.
