This no-sew DIY muff & earmuff set is the perfect winter accessory
Sometimes we get very nostalgic for the past, especially when it comes to fashion. Not all trends should continue on (lookin’ at you, shoulder pads!) but we’re inclined to bring a few good ones back now and then — especially when they’re no-sew DIY. Winter is particularly great for breaking out a few classic accessories. Scarves and mittens are always must-haves, but the most underrated winter accessory is definitely the muff.
Muffs were a winter fashion accessory popular in the 17th and 18th centuries made of fur to keep your hands warm. They fell out of popularity by the 19th century, but TBH, they’re still very practical in the modern age. Wearing gloves or mittens and trying to text is a nightmare, but keeping one hand in the muff while you take a quick selfie is absolutely the way to go for the season. And what better to accompany your ultra fancy muff than a pair of fuzzy earmuffs? So this winter, bring back the classics and make them all for you friends. It’s the perfect vintage-inspired gift.
Muff
Materials:
2 fabrics or faux furs (cut into 20 in. x 13 in. rectangles)
Quilt batting (cut into 11 in. x 17 in. rectangles)
Hot glue
Decorative trims (optional)
Instructions:
1. Cut the fabric or faux fur into rectangles measuring 20 in. x 13 in.
2. Place the right sides of the fabrics together and hot glue along the 20 in. sides about 1.5 inches from the edge.
3. Turn inside out so the right sides are facing out and insert the quilt batting (two layers 17 in. x 11 in.).
4. On one end, fold in the edges and glue in place. Insert the other end to make a cylinder and glue closed.
5. Decorate as desired by gluing the trims in place with hot glue or quick dry fabric glue.
Earmuffs
Materials:
Headband
Faux fur or small feather boa
Hot glue
Felt
Instructions:
1. Cut out 4 in. diameter circles of felt that connect through an overlap of about 1 inch. Cut out 1 or 2 faux fur circles the same size.
2. Glue the faux fur circle to one side of the connected felt circles.
3. Either coil the feather boa around and glue in place or glue another faux fur circle to the other side.
4. Glue the inside of one of the connected circles to the headband so that your desired side is facing outward, and glue the other circle in place.
5. Repeat on the other side.
