Divinyls’ Singer Gives ‘I Touch Myself’ New Meaning

Chances are, you’re pretty familiar with the early ’90s hit ‘I Touch Myself’ by The Divinyls. The Australian rock group’s biggest single spent weeks atop international music charts and remains one of the decades biggest hits. And while ‘I Touch Myself’s original message was a playful ode to sex and desire, the song has recently taken on a whole new – and even more powerful – meaning.

In 2013, Divinyls lead singer Chrissy Amphlett passed away after a lengthy battle with breast cancer – a loss which greatly affected both her fans and fellow musicians. And now, in an effort to ensure that Chrissy’s passing was not in vain and that her music could have a greater impact on a whole new generation, ‘I Touch Myself’ has been re-worked by ten female artists to increase awareness of breast cancer and the importance of regular screenings.

The #itouchmyselfproject, commissioned by Cancer Council NSW, brought together singers including Sarah McLeod, Connie Mitchell and Olivia Newton-John – herself a breast cancer survivor – to take part in the video. As the charity revealed in a statement:

What a wonderful initiative, and one I’m sure would make Chrissy herself incredibly proud.
