Here’s what it would look like if Disney Princesses saved themselves
We all know that age old Disney fairytale — you know, boy meets girl, boy saves girl, boy and girl live happily ever after. Often, one of the two is a prince or princess, and there’s probably a dragon or an evil witch somewhere involved, too. Either way, the day is way too often saved by the daring heroics of a handsome prince. But what happens if you take the guy completely out of the equation? What happens if it’s just the girl?
Artist Saint Hoax offered a 2015 update to that gendered happy ending and completely removed the male hero from the picture all together. He took out Snow White’s Prince, Cinderella’s Prince Charming, Ariel’s Prince Eric, Princess Jasmine’s Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty’s Prince Phillip leaving only the females behind. Not only that, but he then inserted the princesses back into the image — now the girls are actually kissing themselves back to life. Saint Hoax calls this series, “Save Yourself,” and we call this, “AWESOME.”
“I have waited too long to be saved, felt like a book left on a shelf. But why wait to be saved when I can simply save myself?” Hoax wrties on his website. The artist, a self-described “pseudonymous Middle Eastern artist and sociopolitical activist,” told the Huffington Post that the series is a “celebration of the independent, self-sufficient kind of love. The kind of love that you don’t wait to receive from someone else.” Let’s hear it for being our own heroines and loving ourselves! Check out this amazing ode to self-love, Disney-style.
Thankfully, the more recent Disney princesses — like Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida — have all had a hand in saving the day, not only for them selves but for others, too. The princesses way back in the 1950s (ahem, Cinderella) weren’t all that in tune with taking matters into their own hands. This project completely flips that idea on its head because you don’t need a prince to take you to the ball anymore. You can go to the ball all by yourself.
