Everything we know about Disney’s newest princess, Moana

It should come as no surprise that here at HelloGiggles, we love Disney princesses. Snow White, Belle, Elsa, every single one of them, we love from the bottom of our hearts. And soon, there will be a new princess joining their ranks, and we are already obsessed with her: Meet Moana, the first ever Polynesian princess.

We’ve known about the movie Moana for a while now, but we haven’t learned much about Princess Moana herself, until now. Details about not only her — but her movie, too — were released at last weekend’s giant Disney convention, D23, and now more and more information about her is slowly trickling out. Are you like us, and need to know absolutely everything about her? Let’s talk.

1. Moana’s gonna have spunk

All Disney princesses have a little bit of spunk in them (spunk: noun, courage and determination). But according to Moana’s filmmakers, she’s going to have a similar spirit to Merida from Brave, and Elsa from Frozen. Both of those princesses were willing to do whatever it took to not only be themselves, but be true to themselves while they saved the day.

2. She’s got an awesome skill

So like how Merida is amazing at archery, and Mulan is amazing at fighting, Moana is going to excel at sailing. She’s got “exceptional navigational ability,” which will no doubt come in handy as she sets off on a journey to find the island of Oceania, and according to the released plot of the movie, “fulfill her ancestors unfinished quest.”

3. There are awesome sidekicks

Traveling with Moana will be her pet pig, Pua, and a rooster, Hei Hei (hopefully they’re enchanted, talking-animal sidekicks). There will be a human sidekick with Moana, too, or better yet, a demigod sidekick. The Rock is going to voice demigod Maui. And Maui is covered in shape-shifting tattoos, and Maui can shape shift into other things as well. This is going to be one interesting adventure.

Also, supposedly The Rock is going to sing in the movie.

4. The crew behind this movie is seriously impressive

It’s being created by Disney Animation Studio, so already we’re excited. The directors for Moana are Ron Clements and John Musker, who helped out with The Little Mermaid, and more recently The Princess and the Frog.

The music for the movie is going to be handled by three people: Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, who’s responsible for that Hamilton musical you keep hearing so much about; Grammy-winner Mark Mancina, who composed the music for Tarzan; and Opetaia Foa’i, who is the founder and lead singer of Te Vaka, a group that is known for its “South Pacific Fusion” music. We wanna sing these new songs right now.

5. The movie looks breathtaking

Since the movie takes place mostly near and/or on the water, expect lots of blue and green beautiful hues. But the ocean’s also going to have to come to life — like in The Little Mermaid or Finding Nemo – so prepare to be blown away, because from some of the concept art released, it looks as if the ocean is actually a character in the film.

6. The villain appears to be a molten lava witch

That’s like six steps up from Hans, the Frozen villain, who wore white gloves and had perfect hair.

We are already so excited about this, and still have to wait so long to see it. Moana is going to sail into theaters on November 23rd, 2016.
