Mark your calendars: Here are ALL the Disney movies coming out in 2015
The best thing about a Disney movie, is that it’s not always just about fairy tales and princesses. Of course there’s plenty of that. But this year, the Disney line-up also includes movies with animated anthropomorphic animals, Marvel superheroes and—wait for it—Star Wars everything. If you like all three of those things, then 2015 is going to be a great year to go to the movies. Disney is releasing 12 films this year, ranging from live action versions of our favorite fairytales, to a little Pixar movie with Amy Poehler that’s going to be our new favorite thing. And we mentioned, Star Wars, right?
So while you might leave 2015 being a little bit broke, you’ll have a ton of movie ticket stubs to remind you of what a year it was. So pull out your datebook, open up iCalendar, and pencil in all of these movies. You’re going to need to see all of these films on opening weekend.
Strange Magic — January 23
Originally, this was thought to be the Frozen sequel. It’s not. Instead, prepare yourself for George Lucas’s own take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s got Evan Rachel Wood, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth and Maya Rudolph in the cast.
McFarland, USA — February 20
Disney clearly makes a very good fairytale movie, but they also make a very good sports movie, too. Remember the Titans? Miracle? The Rookie? All of them great. McFarland, USA is another dose of sports, this one centered on track. So that’s something.
Cinderella — March 13 (Here’s the latest trailer released yesterday!)
Everything about Cinderella already looks pretty mind-boggling, from Cinderella herself, Lily James, and her prince, Richard Madden. Add in Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett and Stellan Skarsgård, and this is already an A+ movie. Anyone else get chills just from watching the trailer?
Monkey Kingdom — April 17
The lone release from DisneyNature this year takes us to South Asia where we’ll follow a mother monkey with her son as they try to survive in the animal kingdom.
Avengers: Age of Ultron — May 1
Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, Nick Fury, War Machine, Maria Hill, Loki, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, maaaybe Falcon, and, of course, Ultron. If there’s nothing else good opening that weekend, I guuueess I’ll see it. I kid. I’ll be first in line.
Tomorrowland — May 22
Very little is known about this Brad Bird/George Clooney movie, but it does NOT take place in the Magic Kingdom. That much we know for certain. Everything else, though, is anyone’s guess. Regardless, it looks amazing.
Inside Out — June 19
In keeping up their impressive record of making perfect movies, Pixar gives us Inside Out, which will take us inside the mind of a young girl starting at a new school. We’ll laugh, we’ll probably cry, and Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Kyle MacLachlan and Diane Lane all voice characters.
Ant-Man — July 17
Someone we probably won’t see in Avengers is Ant-Man, so thankfully he’s getting his own movie (but he could show up in Avengers, and that’d actually be pretty awesome). If you’ve ever dreamed of watching Paul Rudd become a superhero, like I know I have, this is the movie for you. The actual trailer for this film won’t drop till next week, but Marvel has released a very tongue-in-cheek ant sized version.
The Jungle Book — October 9
Sadly, no trailer is available for Jon Favreau’s upcoming Jungle Book adaptation. But, I can tell you that Bill Murray plays Baloo. That’s incentive enough right there to see it.
A Steven Spielberg cold war spy thriller that doesn’t yet have a name, but does have Tom Hanks – October 19
Aw, man, also no trailer for this one yet, either. It also clearly doesn’t have a title. But considering the slew of other masterpieces Spielberg and Hanks have given us, I bet we’ll all see this movie come fall. The only plot description available is: An American lawyer is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union. Yes, that’s Disney too.
The Good Dinosaur – November 25
Aaaand, last one without a cool trailer, I promise. The Good Dinosaur comes straight from the brilliant minds at Pixar, and it’s a story about Dinosaurs who still roam the Earth — because they never went extinct in the first place. Neil Patrick Harris plays one of the dinosaurs, so YAY!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens – December 18
Star Wars opens in 350 days. How soon is too soon to get in line for this one? OBVIOUSLY, I’m asking for a friend.
