There’s a huge Easter egg in “Cars 3” that pays homage to a classic Disney character
If you’re headed to the movies this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for giant, flaming horns. Honestly, they won’t be hard to miss considering they’re attached to the larger-than-life Miss Fritter in Disney and Pixar’s latest Cars 3. The horns are scary, and hilarious, and also a huge nod to an old school Disney baddie.
One of the latest cars to join the cast in Cars is Miss Fritter, a school bus who enjoys demolition derbies. That’s where we first meet her in the world of Cars, after our car heroes — Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez — accidentally volunteer for the demolition derby themselves (it’s a long story).
Miss Fritter, voiced perfectly by Orange Is the New Black star Lea DeLaria, is the best of the best in this derby, and she will crush anything that gets in her way. The other cars know she’s a force to be reckoned with because she’s a terrifying school bus, and also she has FLAMING HORNS. Look familiar?
Yup, Miss Fritter’s horns are a direct reference to Maleficent.
During a recent Cars 3 press day, basically all everyone could talk about was Miss Fritter because, come on, look at that badass school bus. The black frame around Miss Fritter’s eyes are a nod to DeLaria’s trademark thick glasses, but that’s not where the homages end because the flaming horns very much channel Sleeping Beauty’s resident dragon villainess.
"I love that Maleficent thing they've got going on there!" DeLaria told HelloGiggles. "I said [to the directors], 'Is that purposely?' And they were like, 'Oh yeah, it's Maleficent.' So they were doing a shout out, which I love."
That’s not the only DeLaria shoutout on Miss Fritter. Her birthday is on one of the license places, and the school name on the side of the bus is actually her old school. Miss Fritter is basically one big, giant, terrifying Easter egg.
As for the other Easter eggs in Cars 3? Well, you’re just going to have to see the movie.
