Disney and Demi Lovato are being sued by a musician who claims they stole “Let It Go” for “Frozen”

Say it ain’t so. While we’re all patiently awaiting Frozen 2, the original film is making headlines for different reasons these days. Idina Menzel, Demi Lovato, and Disney are being sued by a Chilean artist who claims that “Let It Go” copied his own tune, “Volar.” Artist Jaime Ciero released “Volar” in 2008, while Frozen hit theaters back in 2013.

While Disney movies typically get pretty decent reviews, Frozen really hit the world by storm. Not only does the film include relatable characters, but it features two strong women as the leads. Children (and let’s face it, adults as well) were taken by the plot, and it quickly became the highest grossing animated film of all time. In fact, according to Forbes, the film grossed $1.2 billion (and counting.) That’s a pretty impressive record to beat.

Ciero thinks that Disney ripped off his song in creating Frozen‘s biggest hit, and is seeking restitution from Frozen‘s profits. Listed in the lawsuit are Disney, for making the film, Lovato, for singing the song for radio play, and Menzel, who sang the catchy tune in the film itself.

Digital Spy said that Ciero believes the two songs share the same structure, and also reported that the artist claimed his song to be “a huge international success reaching millions of listeners and landing on numerous charts of the most popular, top-performing songs.”

The songs do have some small similarities, but we might not have realized had the lawsuit not sprung up.

While you probably don’t need a refresher, here’s “Let It Go.”

We’re not sure what will happen with this lawsuit, but we’re interested in seeing what’ll transpire. No matter what, it shouldn’t affect the release of Frozen 2, which is set to hit theaters in 2019.
