Supposedly, Disney is having a rough time finding the perfect Aladdin and Jasmine for their live-action remake

Becoming a prince is a little bit harder than getting a genie to grant you a wish, and this is something Disney is learning the hard way. Following the announcement that they would bring their animated classic Aladdin back to life with a live-action remake, Disney set out to find the perfect Aladdin and Jasmine for the main roles. But, just like a diamond in the rough, the perfect Aladdin doesn’t simply *appear.*

Earlier this year, Disney put out a huge, worldwide casting call in hopes of finding the right duo, with the idea that they would be unknown actors (even though names like Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed were discussed). Along with that, Disney was looking to cast Middle Eastern actors (?). Guy Ritchie signed on to direct, with Will Smith joining the movie to play the Genie, a role first made famous by the late Robin Williams. (And Tom Hardy better not play Jafar, so help us!) Everything about the movie sounded great, and seemed to be going well. However, according to a recent story from The Hollywood Reporter, Aladdin is not sailing on a smooth magic carpet ride.

According to THR, over 2,000 actors have read for Aladdin and Jasmine, but Disney has yet to find a pair that really works. Blame this on chemistry, since the relationship between Aladdin and Jasmine is what really sells the story (and we all can’t have the charming boyish voice of Steve from Full House).

Even still, chemistry tests aside, one agent told THR that "The test process was a mess," and sources explain that the "filmmakers went back to dig through the tapes once again when the most recent round of testing did not go well."

Sometimes movies just take a long time to find the right actors. It happens. But the real kicker for this is that Aladdin was already supposed to be shooting. The original start date was slated for July, but now that has been pushed back to August. ICYMI, it’s already the middle of July.

We have full faith in Disney, and all of Agrabah, and know that Aladdin will be just as magical as the likes of Beauty and the Beast (and Cinderella and The Jungle Book and Pete’s Dragon). The movie doesn’t have a release date yet, so you might want to save your three wishes — just in case. Wishes don’t grow on trees, you know.
