Everything we know about Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ prequel
There’s a reason that Disney’s 1992 animated classic Aladdin is so timeless — it teaches us lessons about acceptance, honesty and the truth that a princess and a street rat can find everlasting love.
It’s hard to believe the movie came out over 20 years ago; you can watch it even today and be transfixed by the catchy songs, the hilarious characters and Robin Williams at his improvisational finest. Now, Disney is going back to the story we didn’t see.
The studio is in the process of developing a live-action prequel called Genies that zeroes in on—you guessed it—Aladdin’s blue friend from the lamp. The new project, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “would focus on the realm of the Genies and reveal how Aladdin’s Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp.” Sounds kind of heavy, but we’re into it.
On board to write the movie are Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writing team behind—get this—Freddy vs Jason and the Friday the 13th remake. So we’re thinking this might be a little more intense than your average Disney fairytale. There’s a lot riding on this concept: if this prequel is a hit, a live-action Aladdin may follow suit. We could definitely be down with that.
The announcement, of course, is a little bittersweet — since nobody will be able to replace the original Genie, played by Robin Williams. Truthfully there will never be another friend like him.
