Diddy responded after fans accused him of fat-shaming Lizzo
If you watched the “world’s biggest dance-a-thon” that Diddy hosted on Instagram Live on Easter Sunday (a sentence that could only exist in this current historical moment), you may have clocked that time Diddy shut down Lizzo mid-twerk. Commenters have since accused Diddy of fat-shaming the “Truth Hurts” singer. Now, Diddy has taken to Instagram to clear his name.
As Lizzo was twerking to Moneybagg Yo’s “1 2 3,” Diddy stopped the music. “Whoa, whoa, whoa!” he said. “It’s Easter Sunday, let’s play something a little more family-friendly.” Fans called out Diddy for fat-shaming—especially after another dance-a-thon participant, Basketball Wives LA’s Draya Michele, twerked to “Back That Ass Up” without interruption. Diddy also told Michele “I think that was one of the top performances.”
“There’s one thing that I want to make clear,” Diddy said yesterday on his Instagram Story. “My queen, my sister Lizzo. When I stopped the music it was ’cause it had a lot of curses in there, not ’cause she was twerking.”
He added that Lizzo is “one of the best twerkers in the world,” and that “you’re allowed to twerk on Easter.” We full-throatedly endorse both of those statements.
Diddy continued: “It wasn’t about twerking…There was a lot of cursing in the record. And I don’t need child services knocking on my door right now, you understand? So that’s why I stopped the record. Lizzo, we love you and everybody stop looking for the negative, look for the positive!”
And there is a lot of positive to be gleaned from this scenario. Diddy hosted his epic dance-a-thon to raise money for his Team Love x Direct Relief COVID-19 Fund, which supports healthcare workers and organizations in medically underserved communities. Thanks largely to the Sunday fundraiser—which, along with Lizzo, featured celebrities like Drake, J.Lo, Issae Rae, Kelly Rowland, Diplo, and Maluma—the fund has raised nearly $4 million so far.
That said, fans aren’t turning a blind eye to Diddy’s apparent double standards.
As Twitter user Hoodrat Barbie commented: “Lizzo started twerking on Diddy’s IG live & Diddy talking bout stop its Easter Sunday but Draya twerks on that same live & there are no issues. Y’all can’t even hide yall disdain for fat women & I hate it.” Many other people commented in kind. false

Lizzo ultimately reposted Diddy’s Instagram Story explanation. Unfortunately, Lizzo is well-versed in the art of responding to fat-shaming—but it seems she’s forgiving Diddy for this one.
