‘Diary of a Teenage Girl’ is summer’s dark, indie, must-see and it has a trailer

It seems like everyone who went to Sundance this year gushed over the coming-of-age movie, Diary of a Teenage Girl, a film about a teen living in San Francisco in the 1970s who documents losing her virginity – to her mother’s boyfriend. Sounds raunchy, yes, and squirm-worthy but we’re not going to condemn art for those two reasons alone. Let’s give it a shot.

Now the trailer, which stars Bel Powley as Minnie, is available in all of its glory, much like Alexander Skarsgård’s moustache in the film. (Casual moustache joke, NBD.)

Diary also stars comedic heavyweights Kristen Wiig as Powley’s mother. Skarsgård, who plays Wiig’s boyfriend, is already an early favorite this year with critics.

If the trailer (which isn’t to be confused with Diary of a Wimpy Kid, very different movie) is any indication, we can expect a candid, honest, and most likely cringe-inducing movie that explores all the agony and ecstasy of teenage sexuality.

Not to mention the movie is beautifully shot with some unexpected animated visuals like Minnie’s imaginary animated friend.

Fans of the film will have to wait until Aug. 7 to catch the movie, when it will be out in limited release. We are fully intrigued.
