Demi Lovato released her first public statement after her overdose

Fans all around the globe have rallied around Demi Lovato in the days after her overdose. Hours after the news first broke, Lovato’s family released a statement requesting privacy and letting fans know that she was “stable.” A few days later, her friend and backup dancer, Dani Vitale, spoke out about the overdose, asking Lovato’s fans not to attack those closest to her or to place blame on anyone for what happened.

Now, Lovato herself has spoken out for the first time, opening up to fans in an honest and heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday, August 5th. In the post, Lovato wrote, “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction.” She added, “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet. I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well.”

Lovato also thanked her fans, writing, "I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time."

She went on to thank her family, her team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, “who have been by my side this entire time,” adding, “Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you. I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you all have shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

Lovato has always been candid with fans about her mental health and battles with addiction, releasing a song called “Sober” in June in which she seemed to reveal that she’d relapsed after celebrating six years of sobriety in March. Of course, there are still many misconceptions surrounding addiction, and we continue to be proud of advocates like Lovato who speak openly about their experiences.

We’re keeping Lovato in our thoughts as she begins to heal and recover, and we wish her nothing but strength and love during this difficult time.
