Demi Lovato proved that the mid-2000s chunky belt trend is back

The mid-2000s were a dark time for fashion. Low-rise jeans, chunky highlights, and the height of alt and emo music left many of us with questionable style choices we’d kind of like to forget about forever. Of course, there were the good times, too. Accessories were bigger and bolder than ever, which meant our personal style had no choice but to shine, loud and clear.

History repeats itself, and the same is true of fashion. For instance, the chunky belt is back, proven by Demi Lovato and the belted color-block dress she wore on the red carpet.

The singer wore a midi-length Derek Lam skirt and shirt that featured our favorite summer colors and cuts. Want to rock your denim and your sunshine brights this season? The only way to do it is together, of course! You can take a cue from Demi and color-block your denim-on-denim look with a hint of orange, layering it with a thick, mid-2000s belt for some extra oomph.

Whether you choose a denim-heavy look or not, grabbing a thick belt and wearing it cinched at the waist is totally aughts, and it will make you feel like Demi in no time.

Wear your chunky belt over a zip-up bodysuit and suede skirt, or simply over your favorite pair of high-rise jeans. The key is to remember that this is more for aesthetic purposes than for utilitarian ones. But if it helps your clothing fit better, then more power to you!

May the mid-aughts lead the way.
