The inspiring reason why Demi Lovato’s new photoshoot is makeup-free, Photoshop-free, and clothing-free
It’s no secret that Demi Lovato has had to deal with a lot of obstacles in her life. She has been incredibly open about her struggles with eating disorders in the past, as well as her ongoing fight to love the skin she’s in. And that’s why it’s such a massive deal that Demi’s latest photo shoot with Vanity Fair is completely natural. We’re talking no makeup, no Photoshop. . . and no clothes. A woman who has battled with her body for much of her life has bared it all to the world. . . and not only was it spontaneous, but it was absolutely, 100% her idea.
The day before the shoot, Demi had lost her great-grandfather, Buddy Moore. She had been incredibly close to him and was feeling raw and filled with grief, explained Vanity Fair photographer Patrick Ecclesine:
Patrick agreed to do the shoot, and with only her assistant in the room, they worked in “near silence. . . communicating with subtle gestures, nods, and tilts of the head,” Patrick explained. “Lovato had rarely posed nude before, so I had to be respectful of that and tread lightly,” he continued. When I left her at three in the morning, she gave me a quick hug and thanked me for making her feel pretty. I thanked her for her confidence.”
Demi also explained her reasoning in a gorgeous Vanity Fair video explaining the shoot. “. . .When I think of ‘confident,’ I think of many things, but one thing in particular is feeling comfortable in your own skin,” Demi said to the camera, sans makeup. “And I thought there was something incredible about the idea — no makeup whatsoever. No clothes. And no retouching. . . I would have never thought that I would have ever gotten to a place in my life where I could feel comfortable doing that.”
Pausing, searching for the right words, Demi continued, explaining what this project meant to her. “It’s. . . empowering, and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body image issues,” she said in the video. “. . .In the past, I suffered from eating disorders, and I basically went from hating every single inch of my body to working on myself and trying to figure out ways to love myself, love the skin that I’m in. . . you can get to a place where you can love the skin you’re in. And I’m excited to share that with the world.”
Wow. To think that her body was once one of her greatest fears, then displaying her strength by facing her fear — that is true bravery. Thank you, Demi, for expressing your struggles for the sake of other women who may be facing the same thing all over the world. You are a true role model for girls and women everywhere.
